Meet The Team

Peter (Sr.) has been associated with RBC Dominion Securities and predecessor firms as an Investment Advisor since 1970. He has been a Vice President of the firm since 1982 and managed the St. Catharines office for 17 years. Peter has been granted the Portfolio Manager designation for the Private Investment Management program. He started life in Kingston, Ontario, as a musician. Whilst a student in London, England, at the Royal Academy of Music, he was assistant to the Organist of Westminster Abbey and lived at the Abbey Choir School in Dean’s Yard where he was also the Music Master. Peter returned to Canada after graduation to accept the appointment of Director of Music at Ridley College in St. Catharines where he taught for 5 years. He maintained his love for music as a church organist and choirmaster for 27 years at St. Paul Street United Church, retiring in 1997.
Peter is a member of the Brock University Board of Trustees and the Brock University Foundation. He is Vice-Chair of the Financial Planning, Audit and Human Resources Committee and chairs the Investment Committee. He also serves on the Pension Committee. He has been an active board member and is a Past President of the Niagara Symphony, the St. Catharines Community Concerts Association and Choirs Ontario.
In addition to his love of music, Peter’s interests include fine art. He has been a collector of large drawings by the American Artist, David Schofield with whom he is good friends. Recent visitors to the office have commented on Peter’s most recent Schofield purchase – a large drawing of “Lenox Ave” in Harlem NYC. Peter chairs the Rodman Hall Arts Centre Board.
Peter is a great supporter of Chorus Niagara and sponsored the visit by Sir David Willcocks to St. Catharines in November 2008. He also supports the Canadian Opera Company, the Shaw Festival, the Elora Singers, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Niagara Symphony and attends many musical performances. Peter is also serving on the Major Gifts Committee for the 2009 United Way Campaign. He enjoys traveling and fitness workouts every morning at 5:15am at the Walker Family YMCA. Most summer weekends are spent at the family cottage, east of Bracebridge with his wife, Janet, and his two beloved golden retrievers, Charlie and Gryphon. They greatly enjoy visits by family and friends.

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Peter (Jr) started with RBC Dominion Securities as an Investment Advisor in the summer of 1998. Previously, Peter received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Guelph. Peter has both his Securities license and his Insurance license, has completed the CIM (Canadian Investment Manager), the CFP (Certified Financial Planner), has been awarded the FCSI (Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute) designation, and is a Portfolio Manager.
Peter is happily married to Poppy Gilliam and is very supportive of her career (an elementary school principal within the District School Board of Niagara). Together they love sports, fitness, competing, traveling, and spending lots of time up north at the family cottage in the summer. Peter and Poppy have a son, Chase, who was born on April 14, 2009. Life has changed for them with the arrival of Chase but they are having so much fun watching him grow. Aside from sports, Peter also enjoys live theatre and music.
Away from work, Peter keeps very active in the community. Peter and Poppy are the 2009 Leadership Giving Co-Chairs for the annual United Way Campaign. They have been busy recruiting volunteers, making presentations, and asking people to donate for this worthwhile cause. 2009 will also be Peter’s 11th year coaching football at his alma mater, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. The team has been very successful having won back to back championships. He also helps with the Bulldog Football Alumni Association in running their annual golf tournament that raises funds for the program. Recently he co-chaired the campaign for a new state-of-the-art wireless scoreboard at Sir Winston. This 18 by 14 foot scoreboard will be fully operational for the 2009 football season. Peter also is a gold sponsor and a director for the Niagara Spears Football Club. This non-profit organization allows peewee and high school athletes to play summer football across Ontario in the summer. Peter is also the Chair of the St. Catharines Community Fund, part of the Niagara Community Foundation, which raises permanently endowed funds to benefit citizens of St. Catharines. He is also on the committee for the Annual Mayor’s Au Marche that takes place at the Market Square in St. Catharines each summer. Since the launch of this event in 2004, the proceeds have helped about 150 children annually from St. Catharines receive financial assistance in order to participate in sports, recreation or cultural programs. A favourite charity of Peter’s is AMICI, a registered charitable organization that raises funds to send financially challenged children to summer camps. Peter has also been active helping establish a major endowment fund for the University of Guelph Football Program.
