Peterborough Man Establishes Dominion Securities

RBC Dominion Securities was incorporated over one hundred years ago in 1901 by a group of prominent and influential industrialists and financiers. Among these men was George Albertus Cox, the leader of the group and probably the most powerful industrialist and financier in Canada during his time.

Cox was born in May of 1840 in the Peterborough area and commenced his career as a telegraph operator in 1858. Over thirty years later, and after seven terms as Mayor of Peterborough, numerous real estate deals, life insurance, and railway promotions, Cox moved his wife and five children to Toronto where he was able to centralize his business interests. Many people described Cox as a real entrepreneur and advocator.

In 1901, E.R. Wood, a noted industrialist at the time and one of Cox’s numerous partners, concluded that there was a place for a bond house in Canada. And so on March 18, 1901, an application was made for a charter for Dominion Securities Corporation with an authorized capital of $1 million. By April 1, 1901, Dominion Securities was opened and operating and expanded quickly, opening its first branch before the end the year. After a few short years, President George Cox reported that his company constitutes as Central Canada’s most important and profitable asset.
